Candle products make a wonderful gift, whether you’re looking for a present for the holidays or a gift for a special occasion like a birthday or anniversary. Whether you choose a Scentsy Candles, a decorative candle votive holder, or a scented jar candle, the gift recipient is sure to appreciate the gesture.

For those who live in rental apartments or work in an office setting, a candle warmer and a set of wax melts may make an appropriate gift. A candle warmer is a small electrical appliance that warms wax melts or jarred candles, heating the wax and releasing the scent throughout the home. It’s easy to exchange wax scents to change scents as the mood strikes, making warmers a convenient option for those who love adding scent to their homes.

These candle products provide a pleasing aroma, but do not require an open flame, making them safe for areas where candles are not allowed. No chemicals or smoke are released; the wax is simply melted, perfuming the air with a pleasant scent. Candle warmers are a safe option for homes with pets or small children, as there is no flame to tip over or cause a fire.

If you know of the gift recipient’s decorating taste, you might choose a set of pillar or votive candle holders, along with appropriate candles. Choose wooden, glass, or metal holders that will complement their décor, along with a set of pleasant smelling candles that suit the season. These items are appreciated by nearly everyone, and make an excellent housewarming or hostess gift.

If you’re unsure which candle products will work well as a gift, choose a jar candle. Pick a pleasant, mild scent, such as vanilla, that will fit well in most homes. Jar candles make good, all purpose gifts, and are suitable for teachers, holiday gift exchanges, and other general gift giving occasions.

Whether you choose a candle warmer, a set of decorative candle holders, or a jar candle, candle products make wonderful gifts. They add a touch of warmth to the home, allowing us to bring light inside during dark, gloomy days. They add a touch of elegance to family dinners and a touch of class to our decorating. When you need a quick gift idea, a candle is sure to delight most anyone on your guest list.

By Kelli G

Looking for some easy to make Christmas ornaments or some easy crafts for kids for the holiday season? Then try these painted swirl ornaments. These ornaments make an excellent project for just about any age group. Learn how this simple technique turns dried paint into little decals that will cling to your ornament ball. Once you know how, you or your kids can easily turn an ordinary ornament ball into a beautiful work of art!

To see photos of these ornaments, see the link at the bottom of this article.

Supply List:

- Glossy ornament ball

- Glazed plate (from dollar store)

- Acrylic paint (in several colors)

- Paintbrush

- Mod Podge sealer (regular or glitter)

Important Note: You need to use a glossy ornament ball because a matte ball has no cling. Your “palette” (the plate) needs to have a glazed finish so your dried paint will have the proper cling. Check out your local dollar store for a cheap glazed plate. Also wax paper or a plastic surface does not give the paint enough cling.

Instructions:

1. Decide on the paint colors you want to use. Your finished ornament will be covered with individual circles of paint. So you should decide on a color scheme for your ornament before you begin. We recommend two colors in each circle and two or three different sets of these colors. An example would be red swirled with gold for one circle of paint and then green swirled with gold for another circle of paint.

2. On your plate, squirt out some paint (about the size of a large pea) for each color in your circle. Be sure to put the paint dabs for each circle very close to each other.

3. Swirl the dabs of paint together using the end (NOT the bristles) of your paintbrush. It takes very little mixing to get a beautiful swirl design. Too much blending and you just get a new color! Make each circle of paint about the size of a quarter. To cover a standard size ornament ball, make about 30 to 35 circles.

4. Once you have completed all of your circles of paint, let them dry for at least 12 hours. They need to be completely dry before you remove them from the plate.

5. Now carefully peel one dried paint circle off your plate. If you have any edges along your circles that you do not like, they can be cut off easily with scissors. Start by placing your circles around the neck of the ornament and work your way down from there. Press each one on so that it completely adheres to your ornament, and without any wrinkles. Continue to peel the circles off your plate one at a time. Be sure each circle is firmly pressed onto your ornament and that there are no cracks between circles. Just overlap each circle a little to avoid any cracks. Continue until your ornament is completely covered in circles.

6. Paint a coat of Mod Podge sealer over your entire ornament. Then hang it to dry for at least 24 hours.

You could be so creative with this technique. Maybe try stripes or a zig-zag pattern. Have some fun with this project and see what great looking designs you can come up with!

Have you ever wondered where 'Christmas in July' actually came from? Read on and discover some interesting and fun facts associated to this recently created celebration that has become a popular, unusual and even slightly eccentric festival especially known to Australia. Christmas in July is also the time in Denmark for Santa's to gather for a very special event.

By Bernadette Dimitrov

The Australian ‘Christmas in July’ celebration is a somewhat unusual and some suggest even slightly eccentric festival that now attracts international travellers to the land down-under! Christmas in July’ or Yulefest as it is also known is believed to have been born by accident one snowy wintery night in July of 1980 at an award-winning boutique hotel ‘Mountain Heritage’ in the Blue Mountains of New South Wales, Australia. A group of Irish guests noticed the irony of winter weather in July and wanting to recreate the feelings associated with winter back home, asked the hotel proprietor if he could organise a few Christmas-style food and festivities for them that night. Thus was born Christmas in July sporting Christmas decorations, snowmen, mulled wine, carols, roast dinners, mince pies, plum pudding, egg nog, bonbons, Christmas crackers, log fires and the occasional snow fall amongst a magical winter Yuletide wonderland of festivities.

The idea spread fast and now in July, the peak season for the Australian snow fields, Christmas decorations and special events are meticulously planned to attract visitors for snow themed Yulefest celebrations. Many families now enjoy winter holidays at the snow fields where they build snowmen as they watch Santa Claus in the distance zip zagging through the snow slops HoHOho-ing!

Interestingly, the earliest reference for the phrase ‘Christmas in July’ was in July 1933 at a girl’s summer camp in North Carolina USA. The term later gained momentum with the release of the Hollywood movie comedy ‘Christmas in July’ in 1940. Later in 1942, the Calvary Baptist Church in the USA celebrated ‘Christmas in July’ featuring a sermon ‘Christmas Presents in July’ which also included the erection of a Christmas tree, which by the end of the sermon would be covered with donations and gifts from the congregation. The donations and gifts are then distributed to missions worldwide. In 1946 this annual service began to be broadcast over local radio. It was not until the 1950’s that American advertisers lead the way for “Christmas in July” themes for sales.

While the Yulefest has become an incredibly popular annual Australian non-official holiday season, Christmas in July in Copenhagen, Denmark at Bakken is quite unique, featuring the annual World Santa Claus Congress. Bakken is a popular amusement park where hundreds of Santas, Mrs Clauses and elves from around the world come together to be jolly at this festival each year. They hold parades and love to go to the beach for an annual beach paddle. It’s known to be quite amusing to see all these Santas at the beach. The King of Santas for the year is named during this ‘Christmas in July festival’ and many challenging issues are discussed like what is Santa’s true homeland and what size presents should be given! There are even belly shaking chuckle competitions as part of the festivities at this fun event.

Here are some universal thoughts on some of the symbols related to Christmas in July:

- Red is the main colour of Christmas in July – represents the magical flow of life, the blood that flows within all of us – so remember to let your love, passion and energy flow. Commit to show your love a little more each day and do what you do, no matter how insignificant you may consider it, with a little more love and enthusiasm each day and you will discover a new passion for life within you and a new flow of energy.

- The second colour of Christmas in July is green – greenery reminds us to honour the everlasting transformative element of nature. Everything is radiating energy. Energy does not die it merely transforms. Green soothes our heart knowing we are part of an endless cycle that disburses and rebirths anew.

- The combination of Red and Green on the colour wheel – red and green are opposites and opposites create balance. These two prominent colours of Christmas in July draw us to a deep unconscious connection to harmony and peace that we all seek within. The Christmas wreath has both red and green and is tied with a ribbon to remind us that we are all tied together; we belong to each other!

Christmas is a time for gatherings of all kinds and Christmas games. Whether it is an office Christmas party, a Children's Christmas Party, or a family celebration, Christmas games add fun and spread the Christmas spirit!

By Gail Leino

Christmas is a time for gatherings of all kinds and Christmas games. Whether it is an office Christmas party, a Children’s Christmas Party, or a family celebration, Christmas games add fun and spread the Christmas spirit!

No matter what type Christmas party you are planning, one Christmas game that is always fun is the forbidden word game. You have probably seen this game many times, and variations on it are always popular at baby showers, wedding showers, etc. It works just as well as a Christmas game, and your guests are sure to be laughing all the while.

Simply hand out some type of token as guests arrive, so that each one has one. A good suggestion is a simple garland necklace. Choose one Christmas theme word ahead of time. Tell each person that they must not use this particular word all day long. Some good examples are “tree” or “present” but most any word will do. Anytime one person hears another person using the forbidden word, they get to take their necklace (or whatever token you have handed out) and at the end of the party, the person with most necklaces wins a present!

Christmas Games

Christmas at the Office is a perfect time for a Christmas Carol Contest!

A good choice for Christmas games held at the office is a Christmas Carol contest!

Choose a few contestants ahead of time to judge the competition. Let everyone showcase their talent by singing with or without music. Give winners gag gifts, novelties, or computer generated certificates, and let the winners have several categories such as “Best Singer” “Best Dancer” “Worst singer” “Most Original” “Most Humorous” and whatever else you can come up with.

The most important element for enhancing your Christmas party with fun games for everyone is to consider the ages of your guests and make the games simple enough so that even the youngest guests have a chance to win, and everyone keeps smiling while they are enjoying your get together!

Mrs. Party… Gail Leino takes a common sense approach to planning and organizing events, celebrations and holiday parties with unique ideas for Christmas party supplies and fun party games. The Party Supplies Hut has lots of party ideas with hundreds of free holiday printable games and free birthday party activities. Over 100 adorable Themes including Party Supplies to fit your birthday celebration, holiday event, or “just because” parties. Party themes include cartoon characters, sports, movie, TV shows, luau, western, holidays, and unique crazy fun theme ideas.

Christmas is probably the best holiday of the year. It is the season for festivities and gift-giving. It is the time for singing, eating, dancing, and merry-making. Bright and colorful lights twinkle all around you. The weather is also cool and relaxing. In addition, Christmas is the time when people exchange cards aside from presents. So, selling handmade Christmas cards or handmade holiday cards will not be a bad idea. In fact, handmade holiday cards will sell more during this time than any other time of the year. If you have no idea on how to start your handmade Christmas cards business, here are a few helpful tips:

-	Produce handmade holiday cards that are made from recycled materials. You can use recycled papers, cardboards, and even ribbons. Numerous people prefer environment-friendly handmade Christmas cards because they want to help save Mother Earth. Moreover, it is better if you will prepare the handmade Christmas cards yourself. You will be able to save more money this way as compared to when you order handmade holiday cards from someone else. You can draw and glue pictures on the cards. Then, you can sprinkle some glitters and add some ribbons. You can also use your computer and printer if you want the cards to appear more well-defined.

-	Set the prices of your handmade holiday cards according to the costs of materials you have used. Well, it does not necessarily mean that you have to sell your handmade Christmas cards with the exact price as your materials. You have to make sure that you will gain a profit, but you must also not charge too much. If you charge too much, your customers will be discouraged to buy handmade Christmas cards from you. On the other hand, if you sell too low, you will not make any profit. Then again, you also have to consider the time and effort that you have exerted in making such handmade holiday cards. If you set the right price, you will have plenty of customers.

You've poured the eggnog, turned on the Christmas carols and starting trimming the tree. You look at an ornament and think that it's shaped like an onion. The next one is pear shaped and another one looks like an egg? You think hmmmm... maybe there's a pattern here. And you'd be right. This month, we'll talk about the history of ornaments, what to look for in vintage ornaments and their symbolism.

By Martin Swinton

In A.D. 336, an early Roman calendar first mentions December 25 as the date of Jesus’ birth. This date was likely influenced by the year-end pagan festivals to celebrate the harvest. Celebrations included specially prepared meals, decorating of homes, gift-giving and singing. Gradually, pagan traditions became a part of the Christian celebrations. Most Christmas traditions such as the Christmas tree and ornaments came from central Europe. The earliest German Christmas trees were decorated with food; apples, onions, pears, nuts, candies, and fruits were placed on a tree.

In the 1800s, glass ornaments were first made in the Lauscha, Germany. This cottage industry involved the entire family. Generally, men did the glassblowing, women did the silvering and the children helped to paint and finish them. These beautiful new glass ornaments began to replace edible decorations.

In Victorian times, Queen Victoria’s husband, Prince Albert, a German, brought the tradition from Germany to his new home in England. Soon all of England was in on it.

In the 1840s, Europeans immigrating to North America brought with them their Christmas traditions. Prior to that time, Christmas was not widely celebrated in North America. As society became more prosperous, ornaments became larger in size and the colors become more vibrant to reflect the new wealth.

F.W. Woolworth was the first North American retailer to sell glass ornaments. The story goes that he was not too sure about this new product line. However, Woolworth changed his mind by 1890 when he was selling $25 million worth of ornaments in his five-and-dime stores.

Until 1925, virtually all hand blown glass ornaments were manufactured in Lauscha, Germany. By 1935, more then 250 million Christmas ornaments were being imported to the United States. After WWII, the Lauscha area became a part of East Germany. Many glassblowers fled to West Germany and the industry declined. Around this time, Japan and Czechoslovakia began producing ornaments for the North American market

In the 1960’s, glass ornaments went out of fashion when the aluminum tree adorned with ornaments of similar shape and color became the rage. Many traditional ornaments were thrown away during this period.

What to Look for in Antique Ornaments

If you’re lucky enough to still have any vintage ornaments, hang on to them.

How to tell vintage versus new. Earlier ornaments were smaller than today’s modern ornaments. They were usually done in soft colors with hand painted details. You’ll notice that the paint may be faded or distressed in areas on vintage ornaments.

Hand blown versus machine made. Remove the stem from the base of the ornament. Ornaments that are hand blown will have an uneven base because the glass blower cannot make a clean break. Modern machine made ornaments will have a smooth even base.

Where to find vintage ornaments. Ebay, flea markets, church sales and garage sales are all good hunting grounds for vintage ornaments.

Prices

Prices can vary from $2 – $200 depending on the ornament and where you buy it.

Symbolism

Fruit and vegetable shapes symbolize the harvest.

Birds represent the biblical messengers that bring God’s love and peace to the world. Birds were also symbolic of good luck and good fortune.

Pickle shapes signify luck.

Fish shape is an early Christian symbol for Christ.

Reflectors ornaments (ornaments with geometric concave indentations) during Victorian times, were often called witches eyes and were placed on the Christmas tree to fend off any evil spirits.

Star shapes represent the Star of Bethlehem.

After the cookies are baked and frozen; after the party goods are ordered off the internet; when the guest list has been made out and invitations are addressed and sent then the question arises: what Christmas party games are there to play?

That’s when the party planning gets tough! It might help to ask the guests ahead of time what sorts of games they like to play. The answer may be as simple as looking at the game shelf. A small gathering might be happy playing old games before the new ones are unwrapped. It’s a perfect occasion to get some more use out of favorite games that were gifts on Christmases past.

Another possibility would be to play games like BINGO which allow for several players. It might be possible to make up a variation of this favorite especially for the holiday. With the use of a home printer several cards can be printed with the custom made BINGO words. Cards with the letters XMAS! or NOEL! could be used for example. Use green and red markers and printer ink for the occasion.

There’s a danger in overlooking the obvious. Simple outdoor play is a winter favorite. Snowy places offer many options for outdoor Christmas party games and hotter climates are pleasant enough for outdoor activities reserved for summer in other places.

In any climate a Christmas party game can be made out of handmade ornaments with a letter on one side and a number between one and six on the other. These are then placed on the tree. Dice can be thrown on alternate turns and the corresponding ornament is turned without the other players seeing. The letters eventually spell out a Christmas message. The first person to guess what the message is would then be declared the winner.

This section takes you back in time and gives you an insight into the history of Christmas. From how the holiday came into being to deciding a date for Christmas, this Christmas history section would come in handy for a fast revision on your knowledge about the holiday.

By Sean Carter

The history and origin of this most popular holiday of the year, Christmas, can be traced to something above 4000 years back in time, and is associated with the early Mesopotamians. It is widely believed that many traditions and ceremonial aspects of Christmas can be found at a time long before Christ was born, the time when the early Mesopotamians lived. The history of Christmas is, therefore, way back in centuries.

The Mesopotamians had a twelve day-long New Year’s festival called the Zagmuk, which was celebrated to help their chief god Marduk in his battle against the monsters of chaos. Each year in winter, the Mesopotamian king traditionally visited Marduk’s temple and at the end, the custom was to kill the king who would then go with Marduk in the battlefield. However, the real king was spared and a mock king (who was almost always a criminal dressed in royal robes) was slain.

Sacaea was a similar celebration of the Persians and Babylonians where roles were reversed for a day–slaves became masters and masters slaved about as servants.

Much in the same street as Zagmuk and Sacaea, the ancient Greeks had a festival to help their god Kronos in his battle against Zeus and his Titans.

The Scandinavians had a festival called Yuletide which celebrated the return of the sun after a long, lightless, chilly winter. Special feasts were held around big bonfires made with the Yule log.

Romans were no exception either. They had their god Saturn to celebrate. Starting mid-December and ending January 1, the Roman festival Saturnalia, featured boisterous shouts “Jo Saturnalia”, elaborate masquerades, exchanging gifts, holding special feasts, decking up halls with laurel wreaths and putting up candles on evergreens. This Saturnalia festival has a close similarity with today’s Christmas celebrations and hence the history of Christmas is heavily linked to this ancient Saturnalia. But the Christians refused to honor the pagan Roman god Saturn. The early Christians couldn’t come to terms with such a frantic Christmas celebration, and wanted to observe the birthday of their Lord with devout offerings and sincere devotion.

However, as time went on and Christianity spread to every nook and corner of the world, the Church slowly loosened up a little, and came to accept the merry-making during Christmas. Today, Christmas is really incomplete without those decorations of tinsel and streamers, the lights and candles, the piping hot turkey with pies around, the decked halls, the mistletoe on the doorway, the holly, and the stockings over the fireplace, the bells on the Christmas tree and the colorful greetings and gifts.

Now ever wondered why Christmas is celebrated on December 25 ? Is it the day when Jesus Christ was born ? Well, nobody knows for sure exactly when Christ was born. There had been a lot of dispute over fixing December 25 as Christmas. In the 2nd century A.D, Hippolytus claimed this day as Christ’s birthday. Then January 6 was declared by the Eastern Church as the day of His birth. Finally, in 350 A.D, the Bishop of Rome, Pope Julius I, fixed December 25 as the official day for Christmas. This date, the day of the winter solstice, was wisely chosen with the intention to outweigh the popular pagan Roman holiday of Saturnalia.

Story Of Christ

Jesus Christ’s coming to this world was predicted by the prophets years before His birth. The Old Testament has in it, over 300 such prophecies. And, you’ll be truly surprised to know that all of these proved true-from Christ’s miraculous birth, His sinless life, His atrocious death to His astounding resurrection. Now, if you want to know the complete story of Christ, read on.

There lived in the village of Nazareth a carpenter called Joseph, who married a young virgin named Mary of the same village. Mary once had a beautiful dream in which an angel came to her and said that she had been chosen to bear the Divine Child, Jesus, the Son of God. But the young couple was forced to leave Nazareth and return to their towns of birth following a whimsical declaration of the emperor there. And so, they set off for Bethlehem.

It was a very long journey spanning several days and nights. Mary, who was bearing Jesus at the time, was carried by a donkey, and Joseph walked beside her. After some days, they reached Bethlehem. Desperately looking for shelter, they were turned down by every potential host. At last, the fatigued couple chanced upon a cave in the hills, with a stable in it. Joseph made a bed of hay for his weary wife. The next night, Mary gave birth to the Son of God and named Him Jesus, as was instructed by the angel in her dream.

The birth of Jesus was marked by the appearance of a bright star over Bethlehem, which could be seen from miles around. In the hilly fields nearby, some shepherds were managing their flocks, when an angel appeared before them and told them that a Savior was born in Bethlehem. The shepherds were also told that they were to find the babe in a manger, wrapped in swaddling clothes. They soon reached the place where Jesus was born to Joseph and Mary. Also, following the shining star in the sky, came the Three Wise Men from the east, who are more popularly known as the Magi. Bowing before the newborn, they offered gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh to Him. These gifts had a special symbolic significance. The gold symbolized Kingship- that He would be a King. Frankincense symbolized His Divine nature, and myrrh stood for a life of suffering and sacrifice.

Do you know where the word ‘Christmas’ sprang from ? Christmas is derived from the words ‘Cristes Maesse’, meaning Christ’s Mass. It is also sometimes referred to as Xmas. This ‘X’ in the word stands for ‘Xristos’, and means Christ in Greek. Xristos Mass is shortened to Xmas. However, this shouldn’t be looked upon as a move to bump off Christ’s name from Christmas. It’s simply another way of referring to Christmas. So wish a ‘Merry Christmas‘ to your loved ones and dive into celebrating the holidays !
